KPD Coffee - Organic Highland Robustas
The coffee is grown at an elevation of 1500 – 1800m above the sea level.
Shade Grown Garden Coffee
We are growing our Garden Coffee in the shade of banana trees. KPD's farmers are exclusively farming small gardens with an average of 2.3 acres per family.
Garden farming is providing a high variety of different types of plants that make organic farming easy. We don't have monocultures or big fields that need chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The mix of coffee, bananas, beans, maize and fruit trees ensure sustainable and organic growth, while plants like the bananas provide shade and legumes like beans provide nitrogen.
90 % Robusta & 10 % Arabica
Although we are exclusively in the highlands, we are mainly growing Robusta Coffee due to traditional reasons. Coffea Robusta's indigenous originis in our West-Victoria region. We are harvesting C. Canephora Uganda and "Bukobas". These East-African types grow better in higher altitudes, have a larger bean weight and less coffee beans than other Robusta.
Robustas for specialty and espresso coffee
By growing Robusta in the highland and in shade, we can deliver a higher quality with dense beans. This results in better cupping characteristics for specialty and espresso coffee.
